To celebrate the UN International Day of Education, Civocate is making its global debut at UNESCO’s Learning Planet Festival.
Civocate, founded by Erin Yu, is a student-led civic journalism and advocacy initiative focused on making local policy understandable and accessible. Through investigative reporting, data analysis, and city-specific case studies, Civocate examines how inflation, housing instability, education access, and policing intersect with race and municipal governance.
The reason? Local policy decisions shape everyday life, yet they are often discussed in inaccessible language or removed from public scrutiny. This disconnect leaves many communities, especially young people, without the tools to understand how power operates at the city level or how policy choices create unequal outcomes. As such, the mission of Civocate is to deepen advocacy and civic literacy by investigating how municipal policy impacts vulnerable communities. Civocate aims to equip students with the skills to analyze public data, interpret local governance, and connect policy decisions to real-world consequences.
