Paint it White, Cool the Fight!
Each year, the World Health Organization estimates that roughly 489,000 people die from heat-related causes, with millions more suffering from heatstroke. The summer of 2024 was the hottest in nearly 2,000 years, revealing that extreme heat is not only an environmental crisis but a social one. In cities, the urban heat island effect disproportionately harms low-income communities, where dark roofs, asphalt, and limited access to cooling raise temperatures by up to seven degrees. GENGAIA was created to confront this inequality by delivering immediate, low-cost solutions while building youth leadership. GENGAIA mobilizes youth volunteers to apply reflective roof coatings in heat-vulnerable neighborhoods, reducing indoor temperatures by 3–7°C, cutting energy use by up to 30%, and lowering household costs. Beyond direct action, GENGAIA's mission is to unite young people across borders, amplify marginalized voices, and empower youth to influence climate policy through collective action.
