Around the world, young women and youth are increasingly burdened with debt caused by rising health care costs, limiting their ability to achieve financial independence and economic stability. This issue is furthered by gender-based economic barriers, systemic issues for youth in the banking industry, and a lack of access to financial literacy education. Without support, these women and youth in marginalized communities face disproportionate challenges in overcoming indebtedness and achieving financial freedom.
ShieldHer, founded by Maika Liu, is an innovative initiative dedicated to educating and empowering young women through financial literacy as a pathway to safety and self-reliance. The program bridges economic empowerment and online protection, helping participants build confidence, resilience, and informed decision-making skills. Through co-designing interactive workshops on budgeting, entrepreneurship, and digital safety, ShieldHer promotes empowerment as a means of protection—reducing vulnerability to online sexual abuse and exploitation. This session will explore how financial independence can serve as a shield against digital and societal risks, fostering a generation of secure, knowledgeable, and economically empowered young women worldwide.
