In this two-day online event, the registered Filipino youth (aged 18 to 32 years old) will be joining a reading group discussion about the two works of two luminaries in the critical examination of the dominant educational culture. The first session is dedicated to the reading, analysis, and critical discussion of the second chapter of Paulo Freire’s book, “Pedagogy of the Oppressed.” The second session will be a discussion of Ann Margaret Sharp’s essay, “Self-Transformation in the Community of Inquiry.” Although the two selected authors employ different philosophical traditions in their scholarly endeavors, they are both instrumental in promoting dialogical thinking and rethinking the dominant values, methods, assumptions, and contradictions of educational culture. These virtual sessions are not only intended to valorize the works of the philosophers to be discussed, but also to expand their interpretation, contextualize their ideas within Philippine realities, and explore their scope and limits in terms of societal applicability, logical soundness, and reasonableness. Some of the insights from the participants in the discussion will be featured on the social media platforms of the Global Compassion Coalition and Compassion Connectors Philippines, with the aim of creating more discursive circles to evaluate the educational culture.
