CIEDM as a grassroots hold this event to support & take part in five global & national awareness campaigns that share the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the pursue for planet conservation, and all being scheduled around the same time period: Learning Planet Festival on 21–28 January; International Day of Education on 24 January; International Day of Clean Energy, World Environmental Education Day, and Winter Salt Week, all on 26 January 2026. The event aims to raise awareness about the impacts of salt pollution on water environment from salt usages for snowmelt over roadways and for discharging salty water from water softeners, especially on freshwater sources in the mountain and foothill ecosystems. It involves 2 sets of educational oriented actions: 1) Observations and recordings of rain & snow over San Gabriel Mountains (SMG) with tourist attractions during January 21-26. We’ll share our observations with citizen science projects that CIEDM is participating and discass possibility of salt pollution in SMG. 2) an educational based social media campaign to raise public awareness of those 5 campaigns and of their campaigning messages, along the impacts of salt pollution from snowmelt and water softening applications on our water environment critical for source water quality.
