Professor Carl Gombrich

Professor Carl Gombrich is the Dean and a founding member of the London Interdisciplinary
School (LIS), an innovative university committed to interdisciplinary education. Previously, he was
a Professorial Teaching Fellow at University College London (UCL), where he helped create the
UK’s first Bachelor in Arts and Sciences (BASc) degree, a program designed to integrate
knowledge across diverse fields.
A recognized authority on interdisciplinary learning, Carl frequently speaks on topics like the
philosophy of expertise, future work trends, and the role of interdisciplinary education in
addressing complex global challenges. His teaching philosophy emphasizes breaking down
academic silos to equip students with the skills to solve real-world problems.
Beyond teaching, Carl has contributed to numerous educational initiatives. He served on the
British Academy Working Group on Interdisciplinarity, was a core panel member for the
Accreditation Organisation of Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO), and regularly works as an
external examiner for institutions specializing in liberal and interdisciplinary studies.
Holding degrees in mathematics, physics, and philosophy, Carl’s academic background is
complemented by his past career as a professional opera singer, exemplifying his commitment to
bridging the arts and sciences. His work continues to shape forward-thinking educational models
for future generations.
