According to UNESCO, a language becomes endangered when it is at risk of falling out of use because it is no longer passed on to children as their mother tongue. Today, it is estimated that 1 in every 10 languages worldwide is critically endangered unless revitalization efforts succeed.

Every language is a living archive of memory, imagination, and identity. The Mani language of Sierra Leone, one of the world’s critically endangered languages, carries within it the songs, stories, and wisdom of a people. Gibrilla Kamara, Executive Director of the Society for Indigenous Languages, Communities, and Cultures (SILCC) and a dedicated guardian of the Mani language, will share its history and significance, and guide us through a video lesson with key phrases and expressions in Mani.
