In this Democracy In Action session children, youth, and adults will experience “mutual leadership.” The session is related to the Human Library session of January 20 (but can be attended independent of it). Everyone will develop and decide on proposals for power structure changes around the world. The proposals will address rights, responsibilities, conflict resolution, and decision-making. They will use a special democracy format called “sociocracy” and a special process called consent decision-making.
The initial brainstorming will be supplemented by viewing brief trailers of the videos “School Circles” and “Power to the Children.” Then, using consent, everyone will decide on proposals that their organizations and others can forward to UNESCO, national and local governments, and school systems.
Whether you are a young person, educator, policymaker, practitioner, or researcher, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to experience children, youth, and adults making decisions together. You will also get a taste of some new self-governance methods. The session emphasizes dialogue over passive listening and connection over hierarchy, creating conditions for meaningful collaboration. across generations.
