“From one person’s relationship with the food they eat to global strategies for a sustainable world future, never has food education had a more important role to play in what it means to be human” [Haughton, 2015].
Cooking and eating bring people together; however, with growing reliance on mass-produced food products and fast-food outlets people are increasingly disconnected from their traditional food cultures, resulting in a loss of knowledge and skills alongside increasing food poverty.
Cegin y bobl (Welsh for the People's Kitchen) and the Square Food Foundation teach people of all ages and abilities from diverse backgrounds to cook good, healthy food from scratch and so to better understand the role food plays in every aspect of life. These schemes provide access to food skills that can transform the lives of individuals and the communities in which they live, improving health and wellbeing and tackling hunger.
This workshop explores how learning to cook is a necessary element in curricula for the 21st century. It seeks to promote dialogue between food specialists and educators about how to combat deprivation and marginalisation . The aim is to imagine a more sustainable future with based on a food-educated society.
