The alliance, powered by Learning Planet Institute and UNESCO, is going back to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York!
Here are some of the headline events that we will be contributing to the upcoming SDG Action Weekend as well as the UN General Assembly, taking place 19 – 26 September 2023.
17 September, 09:00 EDT – Planetizen Assembly 2023: Towards a Planetizen University
LearningPlanet Youth fellows present at UNGA are organising an inter-generational workshop to share their idea: a Planetizen University co-constructed by youth! This could bring together the wisdom and knowledge of the SDGs, with the hands-on learning and academic excellence of a university, to inspire action for healthy futures. We believe the first generation of planetizens have a role to play in envisioning and helping build this new model of education!

Teachers for the Planet are going to New York to take part in various 17 Rooms events. Sarah Horley (Learning Planet Institute), Lennart Kuntze (Teach For All) and Andrew Cunningham (Aga Khan Foundation) are the co-hosts of Room 4 of 17 Rooms. They will be giving feedback to the UN Deputy Secretary General, Amina Mohammed, about progress made by Room 4. They will also be conducting a working session where some of the amazing teachers of the programme will be working with policymakers on practical policy implementation tasks. Teachers for the Planet will also be interacting in other UNGA-related sessions.
20 September, 14:30 – 16:30 EDT – Uniting Generations: Sharing Power to Transform Education
When power is collaboratively redefined and redistributed, we pave the way for an education transformation that is not just inclusive but also inherently resilient and adaptable. This interactive session will launch a guide for intergenerational convenings, (including the LearningPlanet Festival highlighted as a case study). This is part of a long-term collaborative project on intergenerational leadership in education convened by Big Change and Global Salzburg Seminar, bringing together youth-driven education networks like Cambridge Partnership for Education, LearningPlanet, Restless Development, Teach for All, YouthxYouth, and many more.
21 September, 12:00 – 14:00 EDT – Knowledge Exchange: Gathering resources across networks for education transformation.
The central aim of this in-person meeting, hosted by NCEE and Brookings Institution, will be to reflect upon the progress made since the inaugural meeting at UNGA 2022 and to engage in meaningful dialogues on the advancements being made on the global education agenda. By sharing knowledge, exchanging best practices, and harnessing the collective power of diverse organizations, we can make significant strides in transforming global education systems!
21 September, 14:30-16:00 EDT – WISE Agile Leaders of Learning Innovation Network
This session will be a continuation of the work of the ALL-IN network, focusing on the advocacy aspect to follow the transformational leadership agenda. The network members will be sharing their latest research and the work of Three Working Groups looking at Educational Leadership and its global implications through different lenses.
19-21 September – Global Futures Conference – Arizona State University
The GF23 Global Futures Conference will bring together members of the public and private sectors, science and academia, Indigenous communities and youth from around the globe, to actualize bold steps for governments, corporations and multilateral institutions to push the boundaries of discourse on how we can–and must–act to save our planet.
What is the United Nations General Assembly?
The 78th United Nations General Assembly will take place September 18 to 26, 2023, at a time of unprecedented setbacks on global progress. The Earth is getting hotter, faster. Poverty and food insecurity are worsening, amid war and inflation. Humanitarian needs are escalating in scale and cost. Inequality is deepening. During UNGA 78, world leaders, including young leaders, will discuss and debate how to confront the global polycrisis, and find strategies to accelerate action on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Les SDG Summit will be a central UNGA 78 event. It will bring together leaders and communities to reaffirm commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals at the halfway mark to 2030. The Climate Ambition Summit, scheduled for September 20, will be an opportunity for leaders to demonstrate their collective commitment to respond to the mounting climate emergency.
During the United Nations General Assembly 78, the United Nations Foundation will highlight key moments, and share insights and perspectives from leaders, experts, and influencers across borders and sectors.
