#Planetizens
Powered by Arizona State University and Learning Planet Institute
The idea of citizenship signals our commitment to democracy, but citizenship has always been an exclusive notion. Throughout history and today, definitions of who “counts” as a citizen have separated insiders from outsiders, positioning some people as superior over other human and non-human beings. What if we extended the idea of citizenship to planetizenship, resituating humans as members of a shared planet?
We invite you to share your visions for how shifting our perspectives from citizenship to planetizenship might undo hierarchies and borders, engaging across gender, age, class, race, ability, species, machines, and matter in order to collectively remake our planetary futures. We encourage submissions from individuals or collectives of planetizens of all kinds – human, animal, spirit, vegetal, microbial, mineral, AI, or machinic, along with landscapes, cityscapes, skyscapes, and waterscapes.
Be creative and share any text, visual, media, music, dance, or any other responses – you name it!
- Share a portrait of a planetizen whom you know personally – human or non-human.
- Visualize where and how people learn about planetizenship.
- Create an artwork of what connects us around the planet. Are we connected equally or unevenly, and how?
- Envision how planetizens might connect across differences and create spaces for collective decision-making and solidarity.
- What do we need to learn in order to live well with ourselves, others, and the planet?
- How might planetizens repair the harms of the past without creating new ones and reconfigure relations for planetary futures?
- Tell a story or teaching from your Elders, community, or land that shares wisdom about planetizenship.
- What needs to change to ensure all planetizens, especially those who are most marginalized, can fully contribute?
Share your vision by posting on TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook using the hashtag #planetizens
ASU will be sharing responses on our Instagram page: www.instagram.com/planetizenmusuem/ and www.instagram.com/turnitaroundcards/

The idea of citizenship signals our commitment to democracy, but citizenship has always been an exclusive notion. The workshop will bring together educators, artists, and student leaders to share their visions for how shifting our perspectives from citizenship to planetizenship might undo hierarchies and borders, engaging across gender, age, class, race, ability, species, machines, and matter in order to collectively remake our planetary futures. Join us to explore the power of artistic practice as a process of unlearning and learning anew as we begin to radically reimagine and re-build relationships with one another and planetizens of all kinds – human, animal, spirit, vegetal, microbial, mineral, AI/machinic, along with landscapes, cityscapes, skyscapes, and waterscapes
